Takeout

Every week or two, there is a night where I am too tired to cook, am running late at work, or just want to hang out with my family. So, on those nights, I decide to let someone else cook, and order takeout.

There are not many restaurant options near us. Basically, there are three places that we rotate through. Sometimes we get crazy, and drive to a restaurant that is 15 minutes away, but usually, we stick with our faithful three.

One of our faithful restaurant choices is a Chinese restaurant. A couple of weeks ago when we ordered takeout, we decided to go for Chinese.

It had been a while since we ordered Chinese, and as I sat reading the menu, I started craving everything. I love Asian food. All of it. It’s just so tasty.

I ended up ordering some vegetarian sushi, but decided I would try to recreate some of the other options at home. And that is what I have done here.

Honey

Honey is such a fabulous ingredient. It works with pretty much everything, including pork and garlic.  So, I decided to make a honey garlic sauce to serve over pork. It was a great decision.

I do not have any strong preferences on brands of honey and recommend that you simply use your favorite brand.

Fried Rice

I wanted to serve this honey garlic pork over rice, and not white rice, but a delicious fried rice.

In the past when I have made fried rice, it was not up to par with what I had in mind. After google research, and testing, I have the two keys to perfect fried rice:

  1. Cold rice
  2. Butter

Put your rice in the refrigerator for at least 60 minutes. Have leftover rice from a night or two ago? Even better.

Use regular butter, not oil, to fry your rice. Butter gives the rice a fabulous taste.

Kid Approved

My kids are currently going through an anti-food phase. My youngest child likes to throw food and yell “OH NO!”, like throwing it was an accident.

My other child likes to make up mysterious ailments that prohibit him from eating anything other than dessert.

However, they both ate this. Let’s be honest, honey, pork, and just about everything in this dish are delicious. This is quick, easy, and perfect for a weeknight dinner!

October 2020 Update

I first published this post in 2018. It’s one of my most popular posts so I wanted to give it a facelift! Plus, I’m never sad to have an excuse to make it again. I have added new photos as well as a few more specifics for the ingredients and directions!

Ingredients

Honey Garlic Pork

  • 1.25 pounds pork cut into bite size pieces, I prefer pork tenderloin
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1/2 medium onion diced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh minced garlic
  • 3/4 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • green onions chopped, for serving
  • sesame seeds for serving

Rice

  • 1 cup white rice
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • pinch salt

Fried Rice

  • 2 large eggs
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon butter divided
  • 1/2 medium onion chopped
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots thawed
  • 3 cloves fresh minced garlic
  • 4 tablespoons soy sauce divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil divided
  • green onions chopped, to taste

Instructions

Honey Garlic Pork

  • In a large skillet over medium-high, heat vegetable oil. Add pork, red pepper, pepper, soy sauce, onion, and garlic. Cook until pork is cooked through, about 7-8 minutes.
  • Add honey and stir well. Sprinkle cornstarch over honey mixture. Stir well.
  • Simmer until mixture is thickened. Remove from heat.
  • Top with green onions and sesame seeds before serving.

Rice

  • Bring rice, water, butter, and salt to a boil. Then, reduce to low and cover. Simmer for 15 minutes, or until water is absorbed.
  • Transfer rice to a bowl or baking pan. Place in refrigerator for at least one hour to cool. NOTE: If you use a bowl, stir every 15-20 minutes until rice has cooled through.

Fried Rice

  • In a large skillet over medium-high heat, melt 1/2 tablespoon of butter. Add eggs, with salt and pepper to taste. Use spatula to stir constantly, until eggs are cooked, then remove from skillet and set aside.
  • Add another 1/2 tbsp butter to skillet. Then, add onion, thawed peas and carrots, garlic, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, and 1/4 teaspoon of sesame oil. Cook until vegetables have softened, about 5 minutes.
  • Use spatula to push vegetables to side of the pan. Ass another 1/2 tablespoon of butter to center of pan. Then add cooled rice and the additional 2 tablespoons of soy sauce. Cook, stirring occasionally, until rice is browned.
  • Once rice has browned, stir in an additional 1/4 teaspoon sesame oil, cooked eggs, and chopped green onions (I use about 3 tablespoons of green onions, add per your tastes).

This was super yummy and easy! My only mistake was overcooked pork, unfortunately haha. Other than that, the flavors were great. I did my fried rice a bit different too, as I like my egg to coat the rice more. I did my veggies first, then pushed them to the side, added rice, then eggs. Cooked eggs w/ rice almost through, then mixed veggies back in until egg was cooked through. I didn’t have onion so I used the other half of a shallot I had along with extra white part from the green onions. Can’t wait to have the… Read more »
