My family is a french fry family. All four of us love them. Given that french fries are amazing, I suppose most families can probably say the same thing. Since traditional fries are not the healthiest snack, we don’t have them very often. But, if they’re baked, I feel okay about eating and serving them.

Oven Fries

In the past, I tried oven baked french fries a few times, and they were okay, but not great. They were just too soft. I baked them directly on a pan, and although the taste was pretty good, they didn’t have the crispy texture I like with traditional fries. But then I figured out something amazing – if you baked them on a rack, the bottom doesn’t get soggy! Perfect.

Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries

A few weeks ago we had an end of summer cookout and I was eager to try out my new french fry method. Being from the south, I like pretty much everything with sweet potatoes, so I wanted to make sweet potato fries. I diced them into french fry sized cuts, coated them with some coconut oil, and baked them with cinnamon and sugar. They were fabulous.

These oven baked sweet potato fries are easy to make and although they can rival traditional french fries in taste, they are much healthier, so you can feel good about giving them to your whole family!

Ingredients

  • 3 large sweet potatoes
  • 3 tbsp coconut oil
  • 2 teaspoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Instructions

  • Scrub and wash potatoes. Cut potatoes into ~1/3 to 1/2 inch sized strips. Transfer strips to a large bowl of salted water and let sit for 30 minutes. Drain potatoes and transfer to paper towels to dry for about 45 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line 2 baking sheets with aluminum foil or silicone baking mats (this makes for easier clean up). Place an oven safe cooling rack on top of each baking sheet.
  • In a large bowl, mix together coconut oil, sugar, and cinnamon. Add potatoes and toss until potatoes are evenly coated with sugar mixture.
  • Place potatoes on racks so that strips are not touching each other. Bake for 40 minutes or until tops are golden brown.
