Grocery Store Naan Woes
Sometimes I can’t find Naan at my grocery store. I’m not sure if it’s because they don’t always carry it, or if it’s because they’re always moving things around. I’d like to add that I don’t understand that whole moving thing with my grocery store. I always go to the same grocery store because I can write my list in order. When they start changing things up I get all sorts of confused. It really throws my shopping trips out of whack. But no matter, the point is that I can’t always find Naan.
But, I really enjoy making bread. It feels like such an accomplishment when I see any sort of bread that I’ve made. Plus, there is no better smell that that of fresh bread. Febreze should seriously consider canning that stuff. So, the last time I couldn’t find Naan, it only made sense that I should make my own.
I’m going to have an honest moment here … I made this naan, and loved it, just hated the photos. I wanted to post the recipe sooner, but couldn’t bring myself to post the photos. But then two fun things happened. A) I made hummus and decided I needed to remake this naan to serve with the hummus. B) This happened around the same time I purchased a new camera, so making naan gave me a good excuse to play with my new camera.
Honest moment again … I still don’t love these photos. I like them better, hence I’m posting them, but they still just don’t do this bread justice. Ignore everything except the Naan and take a look at it for a second … I MADE THAT. YOU CAN MAKE THAT. And it’s so delicious. It’s mind blowing. Maybe you aren’t so excited about it right now, but if you make it for the first time, and see that deliciousness bubbling up in your skillet, you will get butterflies of happiness. And, it’s super easy to make. Can’t be beat.
Homemade Skillet Naan
I promise you that 1) you can make this, and 2) once you serve it hot off the stove with your other tasty Indian food, your family will demand no more store bought Naan. Top it with some butter and fresh herbs, or heck mix the herbs into into the dough to spice things up. You can’t go wrong. Note: This is the recipe used for yesterday’s post Tandoori Chicken with Peanut Sauce.
Homemade Skillet Naan
- 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast equivalent to a small packet (0.25 ounces)
- 2/3 cup warm water
- 1 large egg beaten
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1/3 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 3 cups all purpose flour
- 1 tbsp butter melted
- In a small bowl or glass, mix together yeast and warm water. Let sit for 10 minutes.
- In bowl of a stand mixer fitted with dough attachment, mix together yeast and water mixture, egg, sugar, salt, olive oil, and Greek yogurt. Then, mix in flour, 1/2 cup at a time. NOTE: If you want to flavor this bread with some spices, like garlic powder, you can add it in here.
- Once a soft dough forms, knead 8-10 times, and shape into a ball. Spray large bowl with cooking spray. Place dough in bowl and turn dough over to ensure all sides are coated with spray. Cover bowl with towel and let rise for 1 hour.
- After 1 hour, punch dough down and knead 4-5 times. Cut dough in 8 equal sized pieces and shape each piece into a ball. Set balls on baking sheet and let rise for 30 minutes.
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Take each dough ball, one at a time, and shape into a large circle about 6 inches in diameter. Place dough in preheat skillet. Let cook until dough starts to bubble, about 2 minutes. Then, flip, and cook an additional 2 minutes.
- Brush each cooked piece of Naan with melted butter.
